No Contest

So, I saw Eclipse last night. (The boyfriend is a fan. No. Seriously, he is.)

After sitting through the third movie in this series, I just have one question:

How the hell do you even compare this…

… with THIS …

!?!!!!?????!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Oh. My. Goodness. Dark hair, dark eyes, dark skin, and a tattoo? YES PLEASE. (Someone, please tell me he’s of legal age now so that I don’t feel like a pedofile…)

Really though, I don’t get how you can even compare the two. The only overwhelming emotion I have for Robert Pattinson is that I desperately want to hold him down and wash, cut, and comb that mop on his head that he calls a “hairdo”. Ick!

For the record, I was about as impressed with Eclipse as I was the first two movies (which is not very) but this one had enough topless warewolf boys running around to make it worth sitting through the two hours. Yum.

Portraits

I have always found portrait photography to be extremely intimidating, and because of that, I’ve avoided it. In the past, I have gravitated toward photographing architecture more than anything. It’s not hard to make an inanimate building look good (or at a minimum, interesting).

People are entirely different. Every individual has their own unique angles and expressions and poses that do and don’t work for them. A talented photographer can find those angles almost instantly, and work the rest out in post-production. A hobbyist or amateur, like myself, can only hope to get lucky and learn along the way.

I was thinking the other day … not only is portrait photography challenging, but portraits of men are especially difficult to shoot. Making a pretty girl look cute in a glamour shot isn’t nearly so difficult, in my opinion, as photographing a man and not having it come out looking overly posed, girly, or just plain hokey.

I’ve been looking for inspiration all over. I love some of the classic photography on The Impossible Cool (specifically, see examples of Marlon Brando, Carey Grant, Dean Martin and Sean Connery … epitome of cool). Of course there’s also the amazing Annie Leibovitz and David LaChapelle. I love their work, because not only are they portraits, they are also works of art in that they illicit an emotion or convey a story more-so than just capturing a pretty face.

So I’ve decided to make it my mission to learn how to photograph people, specifically men. Lucky for me, I have a willing victim guinea pig to experiment with. More accurately, I have four willing models, because Mike’s band, Casting Shadows, needs promotional photos.

I’ve been out with Mike, giving myself a bit of a crash course. We have come up with some fantastic ideas that I hope to execute at some point, when we have the time and money to gather a few props and costume items. But for now, we’re working with whatever interesting settings we stumble upon, and I’m learning a lot along the way already.

Casting Shadows at the Crooked I

I got a few shots of Mike before his band, Casting Shadows, played at the Crooked I tonight.

Yup, that’s my guy! ;)

It was a great show; even my mom came out to listen to the guys play.

There was also a professional videographer there tonight who shot video of one of their songs. I’m anxious to see the results of that.

But right now … I’m going to bed!

WordPress 3.0

Can I just tell you how excited I am about WP 3.0 being released today?! Of course, I’m also intimidated by what this means as far as relearning theme design to take advantage of the new features (the menu system, for instance). Maybe I’ll have some time this weekend to experiment.

Unfortunately, WP 3.0 seems to have broken my prior theme (Mystique by Digital Nature), so I’m going with the new default template, Twenty Ten, for now. Perhaps I’ll play with some customizations till I have time to develop a new theme from scratch…

Everything New Again

This past Sunday, Mike and I took a little roadtrip to Pittsburgh. No offense to anyone who lives there, or to anyone who is a fan of the ‘burgh, but I’ve never liked it. I’ve always found it to be almost oppressive-feeling. (For the record, I don’t think Erie ranks much better on that criterion, but the latter has the redeeming quality of being my hometown just the same.)

Our main mission for the day was to visit Erica (and my cat, Stuart, who is staying with her temporarily) and to retreive my 50mm lens that she borrowed a few weeks ago. Erica worked till 7, so we decided to make a day of wandering around Pittsburgh to kill time.

We went to Guitar Center and IKEA. Mike found lots of instruments he loved, and I found lots of furniture I’d like to bring home. We also stopped at the Mall at Robinson and browsed all the standard mall-stores.

Then Mike took me down to East Carson Street in South Side. Holy jaw-dropping paradigm shift of my Pittsburgh-perception, Batman!

Our “Great American Main Street,” East Carson, is renowned for its 15 blocks of historic Victorian architecture and is an endless source of entertainment. On and off Carson, you’ll find shops, restaurants, art galleries, theatre, and live music venues. (via History of SSLDC)

Sure, it still has a good layer of grunge on it, but instead of being depressing, it’s the good kind of grunge: unique, artistic and eclectic. Coffee shops, at least three different tattoo/piercing places (one of which is named Flying Monkey Tattoos – OMG!), art galleries galore, and unique boutiques with everything from “anti-fashion” clothing to vintage Mork and Mindy posters.

I also found the little side-streets off Carson to be fascinating: narrow roads packed with cars parked along both sides, and old houses stacked against one another. I can’t describe exactly WHY it appealed to me, but it did. I wish I’d taken photos.

Though South Side isn’t a “hidden treasure” by any means, it was entirely new to me and not necessarily what you expect from Pittsburgh. Don’t you love when you get to be plesantly surprised that way? That’s what I love most about travelling — finding those special places with special and interesting people.

Now I’m itching to pack my bags and go exploring. What unique places have you found on your travels?
