Wedding Wednesday: Non-Traditional Flowers

I love all the non-traditional bouquets and centerpieces I’ve been finding online. Don’t get me wrong — I love flowers — but these are every bit as beautiful and much longer-lasting!

Check out these beautiful, handmade satin and organza bouquets from Make Believe ‘N on Etsy!

I love the colorful feather boutonnieres Elsie used in her wedding.
She even posted a how-to for making your own!

Kyla shared this photo on her blog earlier this month and I’ve had it bookmarked. Succulents are so unexpected in a bouquet! I think they’d make fantastic centerpieces too. Or how about these magnetic terrarium wedding favors!? Love, love, LOVE!

Vintage brooch bouquets are so colorful and elegant! (Bouquet above photographed by Tina Sargeant via Green Wedding Shoes.) Offbeat Bride has a tutorial on making your own brooch bouquet and Elsie shared how to make a brooch corsage.

Scents of Springtime

I love spring. I love Easter. It’s been my favorite holiday ever since I was a little girl. (I think it had a lot to do with the fact that I always got a new, super-frilly, pastel Easter dress every year, and I loved that.)

I splurged on a little something for myself today that totally says spring and Easter to me: a hyacinth plant.

Hyacinth

I couldn’t find any that were open the whole way, but this one is beginning to flower, and you can already smell the sweet scent. Hyacinths have one of the best scents in the world (followed by lilac and lavender), I think.

What’s your favorite floral smell? What things say SPRING to you?

Stopping to Smell the Zucchini Blossoms

I appreciate beautiful flowers in our yard all the time: daffodils in the spring, roses in the summer, and sunflowers come early-fall.

Zucchini Blossom

But it occurred to me while working in the garden yesterday that I’ve never stopped to appreciate the beautiful blossoms in the vegetable garden — blossoms that will eventually turn into fruits and vegetables for us to enjoy.

Watermelon Blossom

They’re all different colors, shapes, and sizes.  Presumably this is to attract different insects to pollinate them? It’s been a while since my high school biology and life-sciences days…

Green Bean Blossoms

Top-to-bottom those are zucchini, watermelon, and green bean blossoms.  The beans in particular surprised me.  I had no idea they had such delicate, lovely flowers.

Itsy-Bitsy, Baby Green Bean

Poking around a bit, I found this tiny green-bean, just starting to grow from where one of the blossoms once was.

Nature is truly an amazing thing, isn’t it?
